Handziak Family

It was crazy surreal to take in-home lifestyle photos of these guys. Ten or so years ago we were in Zach’s basement listening to him strum away on one of his many instruments or perched up with snacks, watching black and white Cary Grant movies, and just trying to figure out the ins and outs of high school. Marika, Zach, and I go pretty far back, so linking up with them after a five year sabbatical (because life happens and people move away) was nostalgic and amazing.

The night before, after several spiked eggnogs and a review of our high school years and what its like to be adults who pay bills and have kids, I dragged myself to their guest room for a few hours of sleep only to be awoken in the light gray hours of the morning to a small voice alerting me of breakfast time. Obviously, for most of my in-home sessions, I’m not sleeping over, but being their to document these two blonde babies wipe sleep out of their eyes and mosey to the kitchen in their mismatching jammies was a treat.

In true Handziak fashion, Zach serenaded his little women between washing fruit and setting the table, while Marika brewed coffee. Zoe eagerly pressed the blender button and cheered on its roar, and Reyes shut her ears to the terror of breakfast prep.

The morning unfolded, and I don’t need to say much more other that this is a sample of what its like to capture your daily rhythms and humdrum, to prioritize historicizing real moments over picture perfect contrivances.
